Jaguar

The Americas' biggest cat โ€” and the strongest bite of any.

The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas and the third largest in the world. Brazil holds roughly half the global wild jaguar population, concentrated in the Amazon and Pantanal. It's culturally significant to many Indigenous Amazonian peoples.

Why this animal?

An apex predator across most of Brazil's biomes, the jaguar appears throughout pre-Columbian art and modern Brazilian iconography. Conservation organizations have positioned the jaguar as a flagship species for rainforest protection.

Things to know

  • ยทJaguars have the strongest bite force relative to size of any big cat โ€” they can pierce a caiman's skull.
  • ยทUnlike most cats, jaguars love water and are powerful swimmers โ€” they often hunt by diving.
  • ยทTheir rosette spots have small dots inside, distinguishing them from leopards.
  • ยทA rare 'black panther' jaguar is just a melanistic individual โ€” the spots are still there under the dark fur.
  • ยทJaguars range from the southwestern United States to northern Argentina, but their range has shrunk by more than half in the last century.
