Overview

Bees are among the most important animals on Earth. Without them, much of the food we eat — from almonds to apples to avocados — would disappear. A bee that lands on you is almost always just exploring, not threatening.

Friendly fact

Bumblebees can generate heat by vibrating their flight muscles, and will sometimes warm up cold flowers before collecting pollen — essentially giving the flower a hug.

Fascinating facts

  • 1

Bees pollinate about one-third of the world's food supply.

  • 2

Honeybees communicate through a sophisticated "waggle dance" that conveys direction and distance to food sources.

  • 3

A bee visits 50–100 flowers during a single collection trip.

  • 4

Worker honeybees are all female; males (drones) exist only to mate and die shortly after.

  • 5

Bees can recognize human faces — they use the same feature-assembly technique humans do.

Myth vs. Reality

Myth

Bees will sting you if you swat at them.

Reality

Swatting is actually the worst thing to do — it signals aggression. Bees are far more likely to sting if threatened. Stay calm, move slowly, and they'll lose interest.

Myth

All bees sting.

Reality

Only female bees have stingers. Male bees (drones) cannot sting at all.

Myth

Bees are attracted to sweet smells on you.

Reality

Bees are attracted to flowers and food sources, not perfume or body lotion. A bee near you is usually just investigating whether you're a flower.
